Air Force pilot "Franz von Werra" with lion cub

Franz von Werra (1914–1941) was a German fighter pilot and is considered one of the most famous personalities of the Luftwaffe during World War II. He achieved international fame primarily through his spectacular escape attempts after his capture during the Battle of Britain. After several failed breakout attempts, he finally became the only German prisoner of war to escape from British captivity back to Germany.

In addition to his extraordinary military career, Franz von Werra was known for his charismatic personality. He is seen on several historical photographs together with his tame lion cub – an unusual motif that remains one of the most famous images of German fighter pilots and served as the template for this figure set.
