Franz von Werra (1914–1941) was a German fighter pilot and is considered one of the most famous figures in the Luftwaffe of World War II. He gained international fame primarily through his spectacular escape attempts after his capture during the Battle of Britain. After several failed escape attempts, he finally succeeded in escaping from British captivity back to Germany, the only German prisoner of war to do so.

In addition to his extraordinary military career, Franz von Werra was known for his charismatic personality. Several historical photographs show him with his tame lion cub – an unusual motif that remains one of the most famous images of German fighter pilots to this day and served as the inspiration for this figure set.
